What is Dua e Qunoot?

Dua e Qunoot is a special supplication recited during the Witr prayer, typically in the last rakah after ruku or before ruku (depending on the madhab). It is a comprehensive dua seeking Allah's guidance, protection, and blessings.

Dua e Qunoot (Hanafi Version)

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ وَنُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ الْخَيْرَ كُلَّهُ نَشْكُرُكَ وَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يَفْجُرُكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَلَكَ نُصَلِّي وَنَسْجُدُ وَإِلَيْكَ نَسْعَى وَنَحْفِدُ نَرْجُو رَحْمَتَكَ وَنَخْشَى عَذَابَكَ إِنَّ عَذَابَكَ بِالْكُفَّارِ مُلْحِقٌ

Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nu'minu bika wa natawakkalu 'alayka wa nuthni 'alaykal-khayra kullahu nashkuruka wa la nakfuruka wa nakhla'u wa natruku man yafjuruk. Allahumma iyyaka na'budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjudu wa ilayka nas'a wa nahfidu narju rahmataka wa nakhsha 'adhabaka inna 'adhabaka bil-kuffari mulhiq.

Translation

O Allah, we seek Your help and ask for Your forgiveness. We believe in You and put our trust in You. We praise You in the best way. We thank You and are not ungrateful to You. We abandon and leave those who disobey You. O Allah, You alone we worship, and for You alone we pray and prostrate. To You we hasten, and to serve You we are quick. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Surely, Your punishment will overtake the disbelievers.

When to Recite Dua e Qunoot

In the Witr Prayer

Hanafi: Recited in the 3rd rakah of Witr, before ruku, after saying "Allahu Akbar" and raising hands.
Shafi'i/Hanbali: Recited after rising from ruku in the last rakah of Witr, especially in the second half of Ramadan.

How to Recite It

  1. In the 3rd rakah of Witr, after reciting Al-Fatiha and a surah
  2. Say "Allahu Akbar" and raise your hands to your ears
  3. Fold your hands and recite Dua e Qunoot
  4. Then go into ruku as normal

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dua e Qunoot obligatory in Witr?
In the Hanafi madhab, Dua e Qunoot is wajib (necessary) in Witr prayer. In the Shafi'i madhab, it is a sunnah mu'akkadah. If you forget it, you do not need to perform sujood as-sahw in either case.
What if I don't know the full Qunoot?
If you haven't memorised the full Qunoot, you can recite: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhab an-nar" (Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the fire).
Can I recite Qunoot in Fajr prayer?
In the Shafi'i madhab, Qunoot is recited in Fajr prayer regularly. In the Hanafi madhab, Qunoot in Fajr is only recited during times of calamity (Qunoot an-Nazilah).
